Food provides fuel and information for our bodies- in the form of nutrients, but also in the form of what our bodies do with those nutrients. Therefore, the right nutrition can promote health, but improper nutrition has the power to promote imbalances within the body, leading to disorder and disease.
Nutritional therapy provides a foundational approach to health- foundations rooted in nutrition, that when supported and strengthened, build a healthy, robust, vibrant body. But when there are weaknesses in the foundations, consequences arise. The only way to eliminate consequences is to address and support these foundations, and nutritional therapy achieves this by utilizing what nature provides to us.
We all have lifestyles that place demands on our bodies, and believe it or not, nutrition is one of the best tools we have to keep up with these demands and mitigate the stress that wears our bodies down. Nutritional Therapy is a powerful path to improved health and therefore, a better quality of life. Everyone can benefit from taking control of their health, learning what is going on under the surface, removing sources of stress and inflammation, boosting nutrient intake and absorption, establishing a healthy relationship with food, and receiving personalized education and support.
What exactly do I do?
What I do as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner goes much deeper than telling you what to eat and what not to eat. Every body and lifestyle has different nutrient demands. Instead, I work to educate and empower you to make decisions about your diet and your health. I work to help you identify challenges and learn how to overcome them. My role is more than a nutritional therapist: I am also a detective, teacher, guide, motivator, accountability buddy, support system, and much more.
I do not diagnose or treat disease, nor do I look to manage or cover up symptoms. Instead, I work to uncover underlying imbalances and deficiencies that may be leading to whatever challenge, symptom, or disorder has manifested. I am trained to investigate dysfunction within the body, and provide the guidance and education necessary to re-balance, strengthen, and revitalize it.
My goal is to encourage vibrant health and well-being from the roots up. I work with the understanding that health is built on certain biochemical foundations- with a properly-prepared, nutrient-dense whole foods diet being the primary foundation. Weaknesses in any of these six foundations lead to the degenerative health issues that plague our modern society. Almost all disorders and diseases have their roots in these foundations. Therefore, when we support the foundations, we strengthen the body- start at the roots to create strong, vibrant branches.
I use the following foundations as a guide to assess each client's unique weaknesses, imbalances, and needs, and therefore create a tailored plan to strengthen them in order to achieve optimal wellness:
Digestion & elimination
Blood sugar handling
Mineral sufficiency & balance
Fatty acid balance
Utilizing these following nutrition-based foundations as my guide, I thoroughly assess each client with the help of numerous tools including:
Detailed health history interview
In-depth nutritional assessment to analyze symptom burden
Food journal analysis
Hands-on functional evaluation: physical exam to discover nutrient imbalances/deficiencies and specific organ weaknesses
Lingual-Neuro Testing (LNT): a biofeedback tool that uses the body's innate intelligence to determine which specific nutrient(s) can work to correct imbalances/deficiencies
Specific add-on testing as needed.
Using all the information I gather, I help determine a way of eating that is right for you- one that respects your individuality. I work to create a personalized and realistic plan to address your unique needs and goals and fit your lifestyle. I always aim to provide the truth about food and nutrition as well as the support needed for you to make lasting changes and be successful in your pursuit of improved health. This holistic, functional approach is why nutritional therapy creates lasting change.
