The more you understand about the process, the higher rate of success you will have along your journey!
How can nutritional therapy help me? Nutritional therapy uses a holistic, integrative approach to health. We work to identify underlying causes of symptoms in the body, and correct the imbalances and weaknesses through diet and lifestyle changes. We use whole food nutrition, herbs, and nutritional supplements where needed to assist in your body’s natural healing process.
The truth is, symptoms do not usually appear overnight, which means whatever your concern is, it likely has been building for some time. Nutritional therapy works to pinpoint root causes of symptoms and restore balance in the body to create long-term health. Nutritional therapy can assist in any situation because our bodies were designed to be healthy- when provided with the right tools! When you give the proper building materials to your body, it has what it needs to function at its best.
I have (PCOS, endometriosis, IBD, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, etc). Do you treat my condition? I do not treat (nor diagnose) conditions. However, I can provide care to people who have been diagnosed with any condition, because nutrition and the foundations of health are fundamental. I support your body’s nutritional needs, offering it a chance to effectively care for itself. Nutrition is a means to support health from the roots up.
What does the process look like? Prior to our initial consultation, you will fill out a health history form, Nutritional Assessment, and a food journal. During our first session, we will discuss in detail your health concerns and goals, as well as your current symptoms. We will explore your diet, as well as habits like stress-management, movement, and exercise. We will work together to create a working plan to help you get to where you want to be, step by step. After your initial consultation, you will be provided with a detailed fully customized plan to get started on your journey, including nutrition recommendations, supplements (if needed), lifestyle suggestions, and any resources that will be helpful (such as articles, handouts, videos, and more).
Follow-up consultations will be similar to the initial session, but with more analysis, including physical evaluation called Functional Evaluation. (Learn more here). We will review more deeply your symptoms, particularly changes. We will discuss the steps you've taken thus far- what's working and what may not be. I will perform Functional Eevaluations to gather more information about where there seems to be dysfunction or weakness in your body.
Evaluation tools help us to can further test nutritional protocols to support your needs. This typically begins with some sort of gut reconditioning program and/or digestive support as well as stress, blood sugar, and hormonal support. I have a very thorough, systematic way of evaluating your needs. We work through the “layers” of your body’s priorities. This ensures optimal healing throughout the body.
We do not get to see the entire picture in one day. The body is like an onion, where we have to peel away one layer at a time. We work through each system in the body, addressing every issue that arises. When starting nutritional therapy, you can expect to be working consistently, and diligently for at least 6 months. Nutritional therapy is not a quick fix. The process takes time and effort, but the rewards are tremendous.
Why do I need to do a food journal? The food journal is an extremely important piece in the healing process. This information helps us identify not only foods that could be an issue for you, but also eating patterns and habits and other important factors that may be holding you back from reaching vibrant health. The most important piece of the puzzle here is honesty- the food journal is not a source of judgement. It is a source of information, and the more I have, the better I can help you!
Why do I have to start with a digestive protocol if I am not experiencing symptoms in that area? All health and disease begins in the gut! In order for nutritional therapy to be effective, we must first make sure that you are able to absorb all of your nutrients, and that no foods are causing underlying chronic stress and inflammation in your body. I have not seen one client yet that didn’t have gut issues, whether they were aware of it or not!
If you are not able to digest and absorb nutrients, this causes a whole list of other issues! Undigested food particles, whether it was a healthy food to begin with or not, will be seen as toxic substances to the body. This can lead to intestinal permeability (leaky gut), food allergies, dysbiosis (overgrowth of yeast, bacteria, viruses, and parasites), autoimmune conditions, and more. In order to effectively restore health in the body, gut health is absolutely the number one priority.
How are the supplements you recommend different from what I can buy at the store? There is a huge difference in quality between the supplements I carry and those you can purchase. First of all, most supplements you buy from the drug store (and even health food stores) can be mostly synthetic (man-made). Creating synthetic vitamins are much more cost effective for these companies. They are able to produce mass amounts, for much less expense, resulting in big money for them. But, our bodies cannot effectively utilize synthetic supplements. Your body does not recognize any of these supplements as nourishing or healing. it doesn’t know what to do with them, and it only creates more work and toxins for your body. And secondly, many cheap fillers (often derived from corn, soy, and wheat- three of the most major food intolerances!) are used in cheap supplements!
Nutrients are best absorbed in their real states with their nutritional cofactors. This is why I only use whole food supplements. Whole food supplements are a complex formula that include plant and animal extracts. Using concentrated forms of foods have an extremely therapeutic effect on the body. By providing the body with proper nutrition, you are allowing the body an opportunity to health on it’s own. I am extremely particular about the supplements I carry and recommend to clients, and use only the highest quality I can find.
Will I need supplements? Although ideal, it is extremely difficult to get all of our nutritional needs from food anymore. Our soil is so severely depleted, leaving it lacking in minerals (To get the iron that was available in one cup of spinach in 1945, you would have to consume 65 cups today!) Our modern diets are also so changed from our ancestors- we avoid common traditional foods that were sources of most of our nutrients years and years ago!
The Standard American Diet is high in calories, but extremely low in nutrients. Our bodies are malnourished- which is one reason why disease is so rampant. Combine lack this lack of nutrition with the toxic overload we are exposed to on a daily basis ranging from our food supply, water, environmental, hygiene and cleaning products... is it really any wonder why health is declining?
And lastly, most of our bodies cannot properly utilize nutrients from food, due to digestive weaknesses and underlying inflammation. Chronic stressors and toxins deplete our nutrient stores and interfere with absorption of vitamins and minerals. We must actively participate in correcting our nutritional deficiencies so that we can create better functioning systems within our bodies to extract and utilize nutrients. Nutritional supplements are one way we can support specific weaknesses and imbalances in the body, and get the body back to health.
What must I do to reach my goals? Each person and their healing journey is unique. No two people will be exactly the same. However, there are some factors that are the same for everyone. Learning what a truly healthy diet looks like is a must, as well as identifying and eliminating food sensitivities and finding what works best for you. Ensuring you are properly digesting food, managing blood sugar fluctuations, supporting endocrine function and adrenal health, maintaining proper mineral and fatty acid balance, as well as ridding your body of toxins are all vital for good health.
In addition to the physical aspect; addressing stress, self-care, emotional concerns, and spiritual needs are all an extremely important part of your healing journey.
How long will it take? As I mentioned above, you should be prepared to commit to at least 6 months of intense healing, and for best results, this means at least 2-3 months of actively working together on a step-by-step protocol. The real answer is, it takes years to rebuild the body. and this will all depend on your individual needs. I do recommend most people work with me for at least 2-3 months and make lasting changes to propel them forward on their journey. Once our time actively working together has finished, I recommend staying in touch for follow-ups, either with monthly calls, or in-person consultations 3-6 times per year.
See “When will I feel Better?” below, for more information.
How often do I need an appointment? In the beginning, most people come in every 2 weeks. Again, this varies based on your specific needs. Our goal is to get you at a level where you would be coming in every 1-3 months, and then every 4-6 months for maintenance.
How do you evaluate my progress? Throughout your process, we will perform several Functional Evaluations and Nutritional Assessments. We also have options for additional lab work including biomarkers and food intolerance testing.
When will I feel better? Many clients report feeling better within a matter of just days, for others, it may take a few weeks. The important thing to remember is this- the better you work outside of the office, the faster your process will be. The more compliant you are to your plan, the more effective nutritional therapy will be. The more positive your outlook and the more joy and gratitude you feel, the faster your body will restore balance. Reducing, or preferably eliminating all toxic exposures as much as possible will also significantly decrease your recovery time. Exercising regularly, practicing meditation and/or yoga, and seeking outside modalities like chiropractic and acupuncture can all greatly improve your experience.
As you can see, all of these suggestions are up to you. How much work are you willing to put into it? Ultimately your health is your responsibility. I am here to support and guide you as best I can, but the real work comes from you.
It's also important to remember is that restoring proper balance in the body takes time. It takes months (sometimes years) to restore function to certain areas in the body. If you aren't feeling better within a few weeks, we can always revise your plan and potentially speed up (or even slow down) our progression.
How much will it cost? When seeking out natural healing, you must look at it as an investment in your body and future. We invest in our cars, and our homes, why not our bodies? After all, we live inside our body for our entire life! Not only that, but the better care we take of ourselves, the greater impact we have on the health of our children and grandchildren. Within 3 generations of a healthy lifestyle, we could reversechronic conditions! What a gift to give your future loved ones!
Typically, a wellness program will be less than $10 per day during an “active” phase, and the longer we work together, the less that becomes. Once you have reached a certain level of wellness, the cost will go down. Please keep in mind, every person is different, with their own unique set of goals and challenges. My intention is to give you the best possible care and most effective protocol, for the least amount of expense to you. Again, the work you put in will determine the worth of this journey!
You are rebuilding your body from the inside out. You are addressing your health concerns from a cellular level. I do not put band-aids on, or mask symptoms. I find the root cause, and help your body correct the imbalance, resulting in a well functioning body. Health is the ultimate wealth. Enjoying a happy, healthy, active life, and having the ability do what brings you joy in life is priceless.
How do I know if I'm ready? How and what we eat is very personal- not just in the sense that it's unique to each person, but we also feel a sense of attachment and belonging to our diet! Eating habits, like all habits, are difficult to change! I can promise you that making dietary changes can and will improve your health and overall quality of life. However, time, energy, passion, patience, and a good deal of self-awareness and self-love will be needed! I'll do my best to help you out with all of that... but there are a few questions you can ask yourself to assess whether it's the right time for you to dive right in with me and make some positive changes!
-Is what I am currently doing for my health and wellness working for me right now? -Is my current diet and lifestyle helping me be the best version of me possible? -Do I have a burning desire to make whatever changes are necessary to resolve my current challenges and reach my goals? -Am I willing to invest time, energy, and money in myself and my health in order to make those changes? -Am I willing to make a long-term commitment to educate myself and implement changes in order to turn my life around? -Do I believe in myself, my knowledge, and my capabilities enough to realize that I am in control of my health and can change my life?
Remember: real change and lasting results take time. As we work together, we will monitor your progress, make changes as your body adjusts to your plan, and assess your goals step by step. My aim is to help you achieve your most vibrant health and be the best version of you possible, and I am here to do that however you need!
